Cato Van Rijckeghem (°1996) lives and works in Ghent. She just graduated from KASK School of Arts in Ghent with her work Our life is full of sunshine about a generation of young women who were born in China during the one-child policy. With a title derived from government propaganda, the work itself concentrates on the blank spaces left behind by this ideal. The culture-specific preference for a son constructed a challenging situation for the less desired daughters. Cato Van Rijckeghem focuses on their shared story, their everyday reality and the collective loneliness they experience. She gathered letters, audio and images in an intimate and personal way. It was very important for Cato Van Rijckeghem to first get to know the people her work would be about and spend time with them so she could form the work out of conversation with them. After this personal approach she regained a sense of anonymity by putting the words and images together in an interchangeable entity, out of respect for the people the work is about and to emphasize the collectieve nature of the work.
